Dear Mr. Senegal, Mr. Gonzalez, and Mr. Zook:

The undersigned join in solidarity with the Mexicans who, as members of the
Civic Front for the Defense of the Casino de la Selva (Frente Civico pro Defensa del Casino de la Selva), struggle to save the artwork, architecture, and forested area of the former Casino de la Selva hotel located in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

We state that we are against the construction of the Costco-Comercial
Mexicana megastore on that premises.

We are appalled that despite the warnings and the petitions of the citizens
of Cuernavaca in particular, and Mexico in general, Costco has destroyed a
substantial portion of the murals which were in the hotel building. Costco
has attacked the 20th century artistic legacy of this city, as well as the
collective memory of people from all over the world who enjoyed the artistic display. Costco's intention is to deny future generations the opportunity of ever seeing it.

We are concerned that the destruction continues and now in addition to destroying artwork, Costco is targeting the urban layout of the city, a spring which supplies water to a large portion of the city the over one-hundred year-old trees in one of the few 'green islands' of the city center. In addition to proceeding with a plan to over-saturate the area
with stores.

In collusion with municipal, state, and federal authorities, Costco
violated the following laws and regulations which we demand be respected:

1. General Law of National Property, article 17.

2. Federal Law Governing Monuments, Archeological, Artistic and Historical
Sites, articles 22, 33, and 34 b.

3. Federal Law of Ecological and Environmental Equilibrium, articles 8,
15, 16, 159 b, and 189.

4. The Federal Penal Code, articles 418 and 421.

5. The Constitution of the State of Morelos, articles 70, 85 d, 116, and
134.

6. The Municipal Organic Law, articles 53 and 54.

7. The Building Code for the Municipality of Cuernavaca, articles 51, 52,
54, 130, 133, 201, 268, 284, 314, and 33.

We demand that our voice be heard and that our laws be respected.

We believe that Costco is presenting a bad image in Mexico of the United
States of America by violating Mexico's laws and destroying its culture and
environment.

No to the abuse of Mexico and the world by the transnational corporations!

Respect for the environment, art, and culture of Mexico!
